On the newest episode of the Allison Interviews podcast with host and entertainment journalist, Allison Kugel, Prince’s ex-wife and mother of his only child, Mayte Garcia, shares never-before-heard intimate moments with Prince. Below, see Mayte’s quotes about the children’s book Prince wrote back in 1996 that she plans to release to the world, being the love of Prince’s life, finding love again, the upcoming biopic based on her New York Times bestselling memoir, The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, and finally feeling ready to re-marry.
On her plans to release a children’s book she and Prince co-wrote back in 1996, that was never published: “Prince and I co-wrote a book together back in 1996 called, Happy Tears, and I’m trying to get that released. It’s a children’s book that we wrote together, and it was never published, so I’m trying to make that happen because it’s such a beautiful book. It’s kind of like [the book] The Little Prince, where it’s a children’s book, but not really. It’s kind of like that. I remember I read it to Gia (Mayte’s daughter) at different stages of her life, and it was so funny to see what she would say in different stage of her life about the book. In the end, she got it, and so I think it will be great. Hopefully, I can get it published.” On Prince believing he and Mayte had been together in past lives, and Mayte being the love of Prince’s life: Mayte Garcia: “I believe in soul mates. I think we were definitely soul mates. I always believed in past lives, so when he said it, I was like, ‘Wow! You believe in it too?’ There was a comfort. You know when you meet someone and you just feel comfortable? We had a belief, and it’s in a song that he wrote called Savior. It was under hypnosis that it came out and he said, ‘We’re like two petals from the same flower in the garden in heaven. There is this beautiful garden.’ And, yeah, it’s something that I believe in very strongly.” Allison Kugel: Was Prince the love of your life? And were you the love of his life? Mayte Garcia: “Yeah, yeah, yeah… pretty much. Yeah, I definitely think so. Absolutely, definitely.”
On Selena Gomez possibly being a good choice to play her in the movie adaptation of her New York Times bestselling memoir, The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince:
“You know what’s funny? At first, when people started talking to me about [casting], I thought Selena Gomez [could play me]. I saw her picture and thought there is just something about her. She has a friendliness and innocence to her that I relate to, and I just saw her playing me. I think she could do it. But I’ve also had people send me some other people and I think, ‘Wow, she looks like me, but can she have that essence of whatever I have?’ I think we will find it. I don’t think it’s as much of a looks thing, as long as they have the mannerisms down.”
On the best advice Prince ever gave her during their marriage:
“I would say the best advice I ever got came from Prince. It wasn’t so much advice as it was just his belief in me. I was just a belly dancer and classical ballerina. Then I started to change my style to fit his music. I remember I used to go with him to edit his music videos and he said, ‘Why don’t you start editing?’ I thought, ‘What do you mean?’ So I started editing. Then he said, ‘Why don’t you start directing?’ So then I started directing. With him, it was always, ‘Why not? If you’re not good at it, then don’t do it anymore, but why not?’ That has been my belief system ever since, and I’ve done so many things because of that ‘Why not?’ philosophy of his.” On finding love again with another musician, and being open to re-marrying after Prince: “He is a musician, but completely different. He plays Jazz. I love it, because it is a completely different world, and I’ve always loved jazz. Prince introduced me to Miles Davis and so many amazing musicians. It’s nice (laugh). The touring is definitely different. It’s not like the Prince tours. His tours are like, ‘We are going to have lunch. We are having dessert. Okay, we are going on stage and then I’m going to bed.’ There are no after parties, you know? There is none of that. I’m thinking, ‘Yay, this is good.’” “You know what’s funny? I always said, ‘No, I’m not remarrying.’ I always thought I wasn’t going to do it again, but I would consider it. Not the typical whole wedding and all of that. But I would say yes to the commitment. I would consider it, but I wouldn’t do the whole, ‘We’re married,’ [announcement]. No, no, no. We are not doing that.” Leave a Reply. |
